THE ORGANIZATION
The Learning Rights Law Center (LRLC) is a non-profit organization that provides direct legal services to students who are not receiving an equitable public education, runs an Education Rights Clinic for broad legal consultation support, and engages in a variety of community training and outreach efforts to further the organization’s mission and goals. LRLC is located near downtown Los Angeles, but is presently functioning in an entirely remote capacity. The organization currently focuses its efforts on the most vulnerable low-income K-12 students in Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange Counties.
MISSION
Learning Rights Law Center fights to achieve education equity for underserved families in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. We provide free legal representation, advice, advocacy and training to families and communities whose children, as a consequence of disability or discrimination, have been denied equal access to a public education.
JOB SUMMARY: This position provides an attorney with the opportunity to serve a public interest nonprofit organization as a Senior Staff Attorney. The Senior Staff Attorney will be able to independently carry responsibilities for a standard caseload.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensed to practice law in California

Understanding of special education law

Ability to relate easily and respectfully with parents and caregivers from marginalized communities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct Representation
-
Independent management of the standard caseload for similarly experienced attorneys from retention, record review, complaint drafting and all stages of representation (e.g., mediations, hearing, enforcement, appeal) for IDEA due process matters ;

Assignments as appropriate to represent LRLC clients in selected individual and class litigation to enforce antidiscrimination protections including but not limited to IDEA, Section 504, the ADA, and Titles VI and IX of the Civil Rights Act.

Outreach activities in target communities to build client base and identify systemic patterns of discrimination and other violations.
Other Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with other LRLC programs to maximize outreach and outcomes for the families we serve.

Represent LRLC in professional and community collaborations.

Provide data to the LRLC to assist with donor development, grant applications, and financial analysis.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
People with disabilities, people of color, women, and other minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Although salary is dependent on experience, the intended salary range for this 40-hour per week position is $80,000 - $95,000 per year.

Paid vacation: Three weeks per year for the first five years; thereafter, four weeks of vacation per year;

Holidays: Eight paid holidays and two floating holidays. In addition, the office is closed between Christmas and New Year’s; in 2023 these dates are December 25, 2023 to January 1, 2024. The office reopens on January 2,
