Strategic Plan
The Learning Rights Plan
There is no singular solution to the current crisis in public school education in the United States. Similarly, we believe that there is no one particular population that is more deserving of service than another. While there are a variety of effective legal approaches and of potential deserving client populations, LRLC nonetheless recognizes that there are themes in its choice of strategies and clients to serve. These recurring ideas are identified by LRLC below and form the foundation for LRLC’s mission and goals.
We have identified the following means for LRLC to make system and social change for students in the education system.
Teach
- Parents their rights regarding the education of their children.
- Providers about the laws to assist their client receive the educational services they are entitled to.
- Attorneys representing youth in the juvenile court system about the education rights of youth involved in the court system to obtain an equitable education.
- Pro bono attorneys and law clerks to represent low-income parents in special education proceedings.
- School teachers in Universities to advocate on behalf of their students through clinical training.
Empower
- Parent and student to self-advocate.
- Organized parents, students and professionals to discuss education issues facing the community.
- Provide referrals and resources to the parents, students and the community to assist them in self-advocacy.
