Lynwood Project
The Lynwood Project was a pilot project from 2007-2010 between Learning Rights and Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD). We collaborated to address non-compliance and special education program implementation from within the district. This is a non-adversarial approach to advocacy.
At no time is Learning Rights advocating “on the other side” of the student. We are working with the District to encourage collaboration with parents and students rather than acting as adversaries.
Over the past three years Learning Rights assisted:
1. Development of LUSD’s Special Education Procedural Manual;
2. Training of staff, principals and administration about special education responsibilities;
3. Implementation of their first Special Education Community Advisory Committee
In the spring of 2009 Learning Rights provided parents of children with disabilities in LUSD with a series of six self-advocacy TIGER (Training Individuals for Grassroots Education Reform) trainings. The 30 families who participated are the leaders in the school community and learned valuable tools to advocate in a non-adversarial manner on behalf of their children as well as others.
